  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup crushed candy canes
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the vanilla and peppermint extracts, and mix well.
  4. Gradually mix in the flour and salt until just combined.
  5. Divide the dough in half. Add red food coloring to one half and mix until even.
  6. Roll a tablespoon of each colored dough into a rope and twist them together.
  7. Shape the twisted dough into a candy cane shape and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Sprinkle the crushed candy canes on top while warm.

Notes

  • For a more intense peppermint flavor, increase the amount of peppermint extract.
  • Do not overbake to maintain a soft texture.
